A web life simulation one person makes with AI (Anthropic's Claude) and fixes every day. The text and code are written with AI; the operator decides what goes in and checks it. The numbers are public statistics from the UN, the World Bank, the WHO and others, with sources on the first screen ('What comes from real data') and beside most facts. The seller of the keepsake pass is Link, run by Stripe; seller details and payment terms are shown at checkout and on your receipt.
2. The life simulation
- 1 in 8 Billion is free from start to finish: no accounts, no ads, nothing sold inside it, and paying never changes a life in the simulation.
- The stories are fiction built on real statistics. They are not medical, legal or financial advice.
- It is made for ages 15 and up. Following real statistics, death, illness, war and poverty happen, and so do drinking, smoking, gambling, prison, violence at home and early marriage; a past world also tells of real history such as wars and mass killings. Drug dependence in adult lives, and sexual violence from age 15, also happen as often as the real statistics say, never shown in detail or how, always with where to find help, and not on shared cards or memorials. Suicide also happens from the teenage years on, as often as the real statistics say, without showing how or why, and shared cards and memorials do not name it. Where the law allows it, a family member's death with a doctor's help also happens at the real rate, never as a choice and without saying whether it is right or wrong, and not on shared cards or memorials.
- Streaming and videos. You are free to stream 1 in 8 Billion or make videos of the lives you live here, without asking first, including on monetized channels and in TV or radio programs. A credit (1 in 8 Billion, 1in8b.life) is appreciated.
- Life records are kept only on your device (browser storage). They can disappear if you clear the site data, if your browser runs out of space, or in browsers that clear data of sites not visited for a while on their own, such as Safari. In-app browsers (KakaoTalk, Threads and others), Safari or Chrome, and each phone keep separate records; 'Move my lives' on the first screen carries them over.
- Support through Ko-fi closed on October 8, 2026. Everyone who gave gets a Keepsake pass as a thank-you: open it with the email you gave with, and if it does not open, or if you gave by mistake, write to customerservice@1in8b.life.
- Shared lives are public, and posts that hurt others may be taken down. Shared posts may be quoted, without saying who wrote them, in posts introducing 1 in 8 Billion (social media and the like). If you would rather they were not, delete the post or tell us.
- If a post, a memorial or a house name harms your rights, use the report button or write to customerservice@1in8b.life. We hide it while we look into it and tell you what we decided.
3. Keepsakes: digital works made from a finished life
- What you get. A pass for making digital works from the record of a life once the life simulation is over. You buy it once and keep using it for as long as the service runs. For any life kept in this browser's past lives, and the lives you live from now on, you can make life films (vertical videos of a minute and a half to two minutes, with a bonus scene after the end credits), short videos for social media (a 20-second teaser and the bonus scene of about 20 seconds on its own), sets of about ten portrait photos, life albums (books to print or save as PDF) and life record books (an HTML file with the year-by-year table and charts, the family, the decisions made and the whole record of the life, and the year table as a CSV file) as often as you like, and put up as many memorials (public pages anyone can visit) as you like (up to 20 a day). On other devices you open it with the email you paid with. Films, short videos, photos, albums and record books are made on your device, and you are free to keep them or use them on social media, in streams and in monetized videos.
- Price. $3 (Japanese page: ¥480; Traditional Chinese page: NT$90; Simplified Chinese page: US$3; Vietnamese page: 79.000₫; French page: 3 €; Thai page: ฿99; Spanish page: US$3; German page: 3 €), taxes included: you pay exactly the amount shown at checkout, which may show it in your local currency.
- Not offered in South Korea. Since October 21, 2026 the pass is not offered in South Korea: the Korean page sells none, and it cannot be bought from South Korea on any other page. A pass bought before keeps working as before, opens on other devices with the email you paid with, and the refund promise below stays the same.
- Seller and payment. Payment is handled by Link, run by Stripe (Sold through Link), as merchant of record: Link takes care of payment, taxes, receipts and payment questions, and your statement shows a name starting with "LINK.COM*". Questions about the pass itself and how to use it come to us. We remain responsible for the pass itself, how it is described and the refund promise below.
- Who can buy it. Under Link's terms the payment must be made by an adult. Minors should ask a parent or guardian to pay.
- When it works. The pass opens on this device as soon as payment is done. On another device or browser, type the email you paid with. Our server never stores email addresses; it only compares a one-way hash (payment records stay with Link and in the operator's Stripe account).
- Good to know. In-app browsers (KakaoTalk, Threads, Instagram) cannot save videos or PDFs, so you carry the life to Safari or Chrome to make them. Past lives are kept per browser. Lives that ended before pictures were kept (before v0.4.60) get words without pictures. The last moments a film shows are free for everyone, and can be watched again from past lives.
- Memorials. A memorial is for a life lived in the simulation, and it is public. Its maker can choose its scenes and their captions, a title and opening and closing words, the same way as for the film and the album, and its mood, frames and flowers; scenes left out are not shown to anyone. We filter out words that hurt others, contact details and anything that identifies a real person, but no filter catches everything. We may take down or hide a memorial or a home name that is about a real person or harms someone else's rights, such as their reputation or privacy. Only names the simulation gave can go up. Memorials stay up for as long as the service runs, and you can take yours down any time from the device that made it: it is deleted and its place comes back. Visitors can light a candle and leave one of a few fixed words (there is no free text), and nobody, the operator included, can tell who left them.
- The House of Past Lives. The pass comes with a House of Past Lives. Every life you put up as a memorial gets its own room there, holding the things that life had (a pet it lived with, a diploma, a wedding photo and so on). With the pass you can decorate the room, choosing its wallpaper, floor, window view, furniture and things, clothes and music. There are no random draws, and decorating a room never changes a life in the simulation. A house starts closed; if you open it, anyone with the link can walk through it and its rooms, and each of your memorials shows the house name with a link to it. House names are filtered like memorials.
- Money and the simulation. Keepsakes are not items used in the simulation; they are works made from a finished life. They never change a life in the simulation, and without them all of 1 in 8 Billion is exactly the same, and free.
4. Refunds
- Within 30 days of payment we refund in full, no questions asked.
- After 30 days we still refund when: it does not work for a technical reason we cannot fix, it is not as described, you paid twice for the same thing by mistake, or a minor bought it without a parent or guardian's permission.
- To ask for a refund, write to customerservice@1in8b.life with just the email you paid with. You do not need to give a reason. We usually handle it within 3 business days. You can also ask Link support from your receipt email.
- If the law where you paid, or Link's refund policy, gives you wider rights, those rights apply.
- After a refund (or a payment reversed through a card dispute) the pass can no longer make anything new. Films, album and record book files already saved, and memorials already up, stay as they are; a memorial can be taken down from the device that made it at any time.
5. If the service changes or ends
If what the pass offers is reduced or the service has to end, we announce it on the first screen and in the update notes at least 30 days before. If the service ends, passes bought in the 90 days before are refunded on request. Films and albums you saved stay on your device.
6. Minors
1 in 8 Billion is made for ages 15 and up. Players under 15 should use it with a parent or guardian.
Children under 14 should not use the features that keep personal information (shared lives, feedback, the keepsake pass). The keepsake pass must be paid for by an adult; minors should ask a parent or guardian to pay. If a minor paid without permission, tell us and we will refund it.
7. Changes
If these terms change, we announce it on this page and in the update notes at least 7 days before, or 30 days before if the change is to your disadvantage.
Coming change (from October 19, 2026): the Minors section adds: Teachers who want to use it in class can open classroom mode from 'Open in classroom mode' at the bottom of the first screen. Classroom mode holds back content by our own guideline of ages 12 and up and turns off every feature that keeps personal information, and payments. In classroom mode, the teacher should watch and guide alongside the pupils.
Coming change (from October 24, 2026): the keepsakes section adds: Keeping past lives on the server. With the pass you can turn on "Keep my past lives on the server too" whenever you like. A browser with it on keeps its past lives (with the lives you can see again and the life in progress) on our server too, so you can bring them back by opening the pass after the browser's data is cleared, or in another browser. They are kept while you have the pass and deleted at once when you turn it off or the pass is refunded.
Coming change (from October 23, 2026): the life simulation section adds: Copyright and new works. The code, text and pictures of 1 in 8 Billion are the operator's copyright, so they may not be copied as they are, or changed and then distributed or sold, without permission. Streaming and videos as above, and the works you make with keepsakes, stay free to use without asking, as now. Ideas such as being born by real statistics and living one life belong to no one: you are free to make a new work of your own from them.
